There were 415,000 thousand children in the foster care system for the year of 2014.

When planning a family, sometimes the idea of adopting a foster child is overlooked.
According to the U.S. government's 2014 Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System, there were an estimated 415,129 children in foster care with 107,918 waiting to be adopted. Most of the children are placed in foster care due to abuse and neglect.
Although many start with the idea of using an adoption agency to help them adopt their child, an alternative is adopting a child through the foster care system. In addition to helping the child, some of the fees and expenses of adoption are actually paid by the state.
If you or someone you know is eager to bring a new addition into their family, this may be a viable option.
