Unfortunately, tragedy is a part of life and many of us, try hard to avoid thinking about it. It may be uncomfortable, but by taking some time to think ahead and prepare a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, you could save your family and loved ones unnecessary pain and heartache.
A Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, often also referred to as an Advanced Health Care Directive or Living Will, states your wishes and instructs others about your medical care if you are unable to do so.
Some of the Benefits
Life Support – You can state whether you would like to have life support terminated and if so, at what point. This can be within hours, days, months, or years.
Avoid Family Conflict - By stating your wishes in regards to life support, the pressure is not on the family members to decide. Leaving those decisions on family members can be a heavy burden and cause strife within the family. Often members of the family will disagree about what the person would have wanted and how it should be handled.
Organ Donation - You can state whether you wish to be an organ donor and any limitations you wish to put on that donation. For example, you could choose to limit the donation to an immediate medical transplant only.
Funeral and Burial Arrangements – If you have any specific wishes as to funeral and/ or burial arrangements, you can state those as well.
Although many believe a Durable Power of Attorney is only needed for old people, that is not true. Unfortunately, tragedy can strike at any time and any person over 18 years old should prepare these documents.
